Scouting

this is a bit off topic but funny as all be. In Canada our Scouts have 3 levels... Beavers, Cubs THAN Scouts. Beavers being for the youngest of the 3 as far as age groups.

Last time I was down in MI some "Scouts" were selling popcorn to raise money and they were just young boys, their father was behind the table working the cash box. My girlfriend and I were exiting the store they were in front of and I thought I would buy something to help support their group. Here comes the funny part..... are you ready..... can you guess what came out of my mouth....... have you guessed yet.

"Oh are you guys Beavers? What are you guys selling"

My girlfriend politely excused my ignorance "Forgive him, he's Canadian" and made me buy a 20 dollar bag of popcorn. Both boys and their father didn't say a word. Once we left she did not stop laughing until the next day.

It's been a long time for me, but I believe there are 5 levels of Cub Scouts here: Tiger Cub, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and then there is the Boy Scouts for older boys. No Beavers though :p

Glokar is mostly correct. On a very technical level, only Tigers. Wolves, and Bears (grades 1-3) are Cub Scouts. Webelos (grades 4-5, unless you're in an LDS unit and then it's just 4th grade) are part of a Cub Scout Pack, but no longer "Cubs". Bobcat is not a full rank, per se, but something you earn when you show you know the basics of Cub Scouts, like the motto, slogan, handshake, etc. Boys can join a Boy Scout troop, when they're 11 or 10 and have completed the 5th grade or earned the Arrow of Light Award.

Many years ago I went straight to Boy Scouts so I never got the Cub Scout thing figured out. (On the lighter side I did marry one of my Scoutmaster's daughters. :D )

It was so long ago that Boy Scouts weren't selling anything!! I was very surprised to hear that Boy Scouts were selling popcorn and I think in some placed calendars, in my day the selling was left to the Girl Scouts! There have been a lot of changes since I was involved, some I wonder about?!

I probably should split this thread, but....

Did you not do any sort of fundraising? Did the families just pay for everything, themselves?

I wonder what the correlation between being in scouts as a kid and geocaching is? I was in scouts, who else here was?

I was not, but have been a leader for 9 years, now - since my son joined as a Tiger in 1st grade. And I will likely stay active with our troop after he graduates high school.

I don't remember any fundraising outside the Troop. I know we paid dues at every meeting, but back then it was something like $.25 per meeting, I don't remember if there was a annual fee of any kind. To narrow the timing, I earned my Eagle rank in 1964, so it was a while ago (Troop 724, New York City).

That is likely where Canada got its system from. The look one their faces was priceless... well actually it cost me 20 bucks, but I didn't mind
