It's easy to get started, just follow these simple steps:
- Register for an account at http://www.opencaching.us (It's free!)
- Click "Seek A Cache" from the menu
Set your search criteria or leave the defaults
Enter your zip code and select a radius distance
Click Search!
- Choose 1, 2 or all of the geocaches shown in your search results
- Enter the coordinates into your GPS or software (GSAK, etc.)
- Find the cache! Sign the logbook, trade trinkets, etc.
- Once found, return to this site and log your find.
Feel free to ask questions! Any question, no matter how simple or strange, is OK to ask.
HELPFUL HINTS:
Find a friend to go geocaching with you!
Always take a pen or pencil with you.
If you want to trade trinkets, take some with you. The accepted rule is if you take something, you must leave something.
Mark you vehicle as a waypoint so you can easily get back to it!
Leave the geocache just as you found it.
Make sure the public (aka muggles) doesn't see you retrieve or hide the cache.
Be safe... watch for critters, snakes, bugs, sharp objects, dangerous areas, etc.
Be sure to carry extra batteries, water to drink, etc.

Re: How to get started geocaching!
Initially, I post my first OCUS cache in TEXT, but have now upgraded it to HTML. I was thinking about adding a picture to it, but was unable to find a method to upload it. May I assume that pictures must be stored somewhere else, such as on ImageShack or PhotoBucket, and then cross-linked to my OCUS page?

Re: How to get started geocaching!
Will someone please provide me with a list of X/HTML tags etc. that are NOT allowed on this system?
Having this information will help me (not to waste my time) in creating my future OCUS cache pages.
Or is this information classified and kept in a locked box somewhere in the dungeon of the OCUS castle?

Rather than list all HTML tags that are not allowed, it is easier to list the ones that are. http://www.opencaching.us/articles.php?page=htmltags
This link is found below the editing box on the "Hide A Cache" page as well as in the Wiki.
Regarding picture uploads, it is better to host them off site at places like Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket, etc. You can upload them to our server but size restrictions must be adhered to. You have much more freedom in regards to file and image size when you host them off site.
