Google maps bug

Post by k3iv » Sun Sep 16, 2012 5:41 pm

The URL that brings up an external Google map doesn't work when the cache name includes "to". See the external request for OU03B6, which invokes https://maps.google.com/maps?q=30.62543 ... o+Nowhere)

Google maps takes the "to" as indicating that you want directions and then can't understand what you're asking for.

I did notice that surrounding the name string in quotes worked OK although the quotes are shown in the search results https://maps.google.com/maps?q=30.62543 ... owhere%22)

I also discovered that there were at least two "Road to Nowhere"s in Google maps--one in Irvington, VA and the other in Iqaluit, NU, Canada.

Thanks. Yeah, that's a known issue, with the "to". Google Maps will try to give your directions, if it sees that. I saw that even with quotes, it still tries to give me directions, once I make a choice between the two location options.

Of course, once you have the map up, you can just delete all but the coordinates and you'll have a good map.

Once we get we get more reliable coding help, I'd like to fix that by having the waypoint displayed, instead of the cache name.
