Someone doesn't like us...

Post by RVRoadTrip » Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:21 pm

Someone is going to the various Wiki sites and deleting references to OC US. Now that's pretty sad...

By the date on the post I see the servers are in Europe? I too find it pretty sad and lame. I wonder what the motivation is? Fear? The need to control?

The OC US servers are in Texas... hosted by Rackspace. The server time was set to CST but for some reason it likes to go back to GMT. As for the Wiki changes, one is http://www.wikihow.com/Go-Geocaching , I added some info several days ago and it vanished. I added it again today and it is already gone. I forget what the other site was off hand.

I'm no Wiki expert so I may have done something wrong, but after I submitted it... it showed up just fine on my screen.

I've never been too familiar with Wiki anything. If somebody is deleting OCUS references, that's just terrible. Isn't there a way to see the revision history? I'm pretty sure you at least have to be logged in to modify a wiki.

Maybe iJeep will chime in, he's the Wiki expert.

Hey Jerry,
I signed up for a wikiHow account and added a section that included links to all the main cache sites. It was promptly removed. Since I had an account the admin was able to send me a their policy on external links. Short answer--they don't like links; they tend to die. It's an issue of article quality; it's not about hating OC.

Here's a PM I received from one of the Admins when I inquired about the deletions:
Actually, the sites you added would be good additions, but the policy is specific, to keep articles from becoming linkfarms and to assure the content of the article itself is sufficient to accomplish the task the article describes.

Thanks,

Bob

I never posted a link, just mentioned the name of the site... in the same manner that geocaching.com is mentioned. Looks like they are making their preference known.

Unless I'm missing something, the only specific reference to "geocaching.com" I saw on http://www.wikihow.com/Go-Geocaching is in the two Google ads at the bottom of the page.
