Serious New TWITTER Security Problem - Must Read

Post by DudleyGrunt » Tue Sep 21, 2010 9:54 am

If you use twitter, you need to read this...

Twitter Mouseover Security Flaw Affecting Thousands of Users [WARNING]

N SHORT: If you can, go into Twitter w/ a 3rd party app like TweetDeck or through a smartphone app and delete any recent messages you don't remember posting. That way people won't get infected by your message.

If you don't have access to a 3rd party app, I found I was able to go to my profile page http://twitter.com/<username> and carefully scroll down to the problem tweets and delete them. I was careful to try to not "mouse over" the page an more than I had to, though.

Never really got into twitter. Don't really feel the need to share every moment of every day with everybody. If somebody wants to know what's going on in my life, they can ask. I have accounts on myspace and facebook, but to be honest, I don't use the myspace one any more except for checking band pages and the facebook one is pretty much for the random game or two that gets real old real fast. So yeah, social networking not really my thing.

Looks like they've got the flaw patched already (according to USA Today.)

I share random thoughts and such, along with various geocaching info. Nothing I would consider private. I try hard not to post things like, "Installed awesome new home theater, but it's gonna sit unused in my empty house while I'm out of state for 2 weeks. Bummer!" Still, after today, I've locked my account so I need to approve followers and to keep my "tweets" from being viewable by all.

If anyone here does use Twitter, you can find me there as dudleygrunt, too.

Yeah, they do appear to have patched the problem. Pretty much as soon as I'd finished posting to the various caching forums I use.

Trust me, you'd be sorely disappointed if you came looking for my "awesome new home theater". :(

Which means it's a walkman with a set of speakers he found on the curb spliced into the headphone jack. But hey, those cassettes sure do sound awesome!
