Advice for Boy Scout Geocaching Merit Badge

Post by DisneyScout » Tue Sep 09, 2014 3:09 pm

My son's Scoutmaster asked me to work with the boys on geocaching during this month's camping trip. Initially they were going to be camping somewhere that had all kinds of caches already hidden. They weren't able to reserve a site there and many of the areas they checked were already booked. They finally made a reservation at Smallwood State Park in Marbury, MD. Initial research shows there is one geocache there. Granted, it's part of the Captain John Smith Geotrail, but it's the only one there. I know there are some Scouters on here, so I would love suggestions.

Apparently the Zombie Horde has done some geocaches in the area. I'll have to take a closer look.

I have a PowerPoint that I got from firenice (?) who also happens to be a GC reviewer. I adapted it and have used it as a basis for when I have worked with our scouts on the MB. I'd be happy to get it to you so you can see if it would be helpful at all.

That would be great! My email address is my user name at gmail.

Do you have any hints how to use Wherigo on an Android? I'm still trying to figure it out.

Dave,

I contacted the CO of the Patriotic Scout Cache to Eagle #1 in Glen Burnie and asked her if she already had other caches in the series or if she needed assistance finding more. Do you know of some Eagle projects within Four Rivers that could be added to the series? I told her about the two I am aware of on The B&A Trail, one new one at Severn Danza park, two in Downs Park and one at Wesley Grove UMC. I also told her about some that are at Girl Scout Camp Woodlands, but she wanted to make sure the caches were accessible to the public.

Need an opinion. One of the requirements is to track a Travel Bug. Do you think it would be okay to track a GeoKrety instead? I'm still new to being a merit badge counselor.

1. I will send you the PowerPoint tonight.

2. I have used the WhereYouGo app on Android a few times.

3. Not familiar with any projects over in 4 Rivers area.

4. That is what I really don't like about the MB - it is so Groundspeak-centric. However, I've gone with the conservative approach and avoided modifying the requirements at all and stuck to them exactly. I don't see any reason it would significantly change the requirement, though, except that you probably wouldn't see as much activity on a GeoKrety.
