GAPP Geocaching Manager

Post by tripman1 » Mon Oct 21, 2013 8:49 pm

Has anyone heard of this desktop geocache manager? It looks interesting, but I wonder if it is a resource hog. I do like the "Open" source aspect and it supports the okapi project which is mentioned on the OCUS blog for smartphone apps. It might be able to have a smartphone app and desktop program unify the same set of cache data.

Oh boy, now I'm em-bare-assed for not knowing about that for the blog post. I guess I can get away with saying I was only talking about smartphone apps.

Nope, I'll have to try 'er out right now. A quick glance tells me its sort of a GSAK clone. There is another GSAK clone written by a Czech developer Geoget Last I heard though, he had no plans of becoming OKAPI compliant. And as of the time of this post, his website seems to be down. Temporary, I'm sure. And he too is most definitely authorized to use the closely guarded Geocaching live API, as is GAPP.

Just downloaded and installed, seems to load fairly fast. The API integration was easy and it pulled my home coords and centered for me. I am having trouble importing my GSAK database. Seems I have a premium column that won't import properly.

Oh, I see I did get an email from OKAPI, GAPP was actually just registered on Sunday, October 13th. Either that dev works really fast, or he didn't register until he was "done". I'm not a big GSAK person. I've dabbled in it a few times over the years, but I never bought the full version, and currently do not have a copy on my primary computer. But there are enough people around here whom I'm sure will be attempting to import their DB. My two fellow admins Dudley Grunt and NativeTxn, I'm sure, to name two.

I'll try to check it out, soon. Do use GSAK regularly, so will be interesting to see how it compares.

Hi forum members of opencaching.us,

I am Robert Peters, the (main) developer of Globalcaching APPlication (short GAPP).

Thank you for your interrest in GAPP. GAPP has been arround now for more than 1.5 years and the number of features are growing fast. We are also very excited to add OKAPI support to GAPP. However, due to the fact that for some reasons we cannot get the same fields for a geocache as on opencaching.de/pl/nl, I had to disable the OKAPI for opencaching.us/org.uk. But we hope to add this soon. Who knows people behind opencaching.us can help us with that.
Also, OKAPI support will be expanded. Right now we finished the full OAuth process, so we can implement features that require Authorization level 3.
So much for the nerdy stuff.

If you would like to try GAPP and have questions about i, please feel free to contact me or ask it on this forum. (this forum is bookmarked now ;-)
As you might have noticed, GAPP is fully Open Source and I am not the only one working on it. If you are a programmer (oh oh, again nerdy stuff, sorry about that) you are welcome to participate. We can certainly use more OKAPI experience and users!

The source can be found here: https://github.com/GlobalcachingEU/GAPP
The wiki here: https://github.com/GlobalcachingEU/GAPP/wiki
And on the wiki pages you find more tech info: https://github.com/GlobalcachingEU/GAPP/wiki/_pages

But most of all; if you have requests or issues, please let me know.
tripman1, if you send me the gsak database, I can have a look at it. (email can be send to hemenrob (at) gmail.com)

Tip: Action Builder. Create the mosst complex filters with ease of use: http://gapp.globalcaching.eu/Features/A ... ilder.aspx

I hope you don't mind the links and this post as advertisements. It is Open Source and non-commercial. We just want to make the best geocaching manager.

Oh, no problem at all Robert, thanks for posting here!! Ourselves and Opencaching.org.uk use the older version of the OC.pl code. Paul from org.uk basically translated it from Polish in 2009, and we pretty much just copied his site, so that's how old it is. Not that I don't think it works pretty good, most of the time. We have just started to work with oc.pl within the last week on upgrading, and Paul will most likely go along with us. However, we believe this will take several months. In particular, the unique cache types we have added at Opencaching.us (Guestbook caches, BIT Caches, Dead-Drop caches etc...) are going to cause difficulty. I will download GAPP soon, I have to take care of the Microsoft net 4.0 thing. :D

OK, that explains it. I will wait for the new OKAPI version for us and org.uk
You should still be able to import opencaching.us GPX files though.
Mr.Yuck wrote:I have to take care of the Microsoft net 4.0 thing.
Yeah, that is a tricky thing. The problem is that it needs the .NET 4 FULL profile. Most people do have .NET 4.0 installed on their PC, but most of the time this is the Client profile only.
However, when you start GAPP and do not have the full version installed, you should get a message.
GAPP needs the full profile, because it uses the WebBrowser component for several stuff.

I see a lot of Munzee banners here on this forum in the signatures. Maybe it is a good thing to mention that GAPP supports Munzee also. it is very easy to import Munzees and it is very fast.
Here is a video of that:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5z_9Dreq9c

This is an 'old' video. meanwhile GAPP supports account settings for any type of geocache source (website). Munzees will get a MZ code and has its own user name. In the video it is said that the munzee account naam is replaced by the geocaching.com account name, but this is not the case with the current version.

Munzees will get their own icons. Within settings you can determine which tag should be used for which munzee when you export it to GPX.

Mentioned in another thread, but this is another reason we need to enure that BIT Caches (and other unique to ONCA types?) work with OKAPI.
