Garmin bought Opencaching.com

Post by RVRoadTrip » Wed Nov 10, 2010 9:12 am

Got word this morning that Garmin bought the domain Opencaching.com (not Opencaching.us). Let the speculation fly...

Yep, I got a retweet about it on my Twitter account. Along with a link to a Geocacher's blog who is speculating they're going to try to go up against Geocaching.com. Of course this blog post is just speculative...... :?:

They now have a new logo up on the site...and nothing else.

And a little bit of info/speculation can be found here: http://itsnotaboutthenumbers.wordpress.com/

Yeah, and the source shows they are using Analytics to track visitors.

Looks like they have a slogan up on the site now:
"As free and open as the great outdoors..."

Opencaching.US is still the first site to show up when you Google "opencaching" That's a good thing :D

Yeah, but you watch Garmin buy up ad slots associated with geocaching keywords. Paid search results...

I don't know. Did you ever Google "history of Geocaching"? The first thing that comes up is the first "history of Geocaching" posted to the web. It's on GPSgames.org, and it ain't very flattering towards the folks at Groundspeak, Inc. :D Now that I mention that, we should get Scout to update the bottom of the page to include other opencaching sites, most notably this one.

This doesn't mean anything, but I just have a gut feeling Garmin isn't going to go through with this, and take on the 500 Lb. Gorilla that is GC.com. The whole thing could just be a negotiation ploy to get Groundspeak to create Chirp caches or something. I've been wrong about many things many times though.
